THE SPA AT THE FOUR SEASONS, KOH SAMUI

There are resorts that seem straight out of a perfect dream: the Four Seasons on the Thai island of Koh Samui is one of them (www.fourseasons.com/kohsamui). Picture grand teak villas with infinity pools immersed in lush vegetation overlooking an idyllic bay, a private beach of pure white sand, and panoramic restaurants serving the finest local and international cuisine.  Add a superb intuitive service and an amazing attention to detail, and it’s clear why this destination is the epitome of luxury.  In the midst of the jungle, the Spa is equally unique. The “treatment rooms” are small villas, equipped with private steam room, indoor and outdoor showers, and outdoor bathtub; where to experience holistic rituals, mostly inspired by the local culture,  in total privacy, surrounded by pristine tropical nature. Most treatments can be also enjoyed in one’s own villa, or on the beach, caressed by the sea breeze. The latest addition to the menu? The Muai Thai Recovery Treatment, part of the Muai Thai Adventure Package, a full day immersion in the ancient martial art of this nation. The day starts with a lesson, on a panoramic outdoor ring, with the resident pro, a local champion; where one learns the basic moves of this sport, increasing strength, agility, and concentration. The inevitable beginner’s sore muscles are then tended in a pampering ritual including a Thai herbal steam, a soothing leg massage, and a restoring body massage using black pepper, clove and ylang-ylang essential oils. The day ends in Chaweng Boxing Stadium, where, from VIP seats, one has the exceptional chance to watch a series of Muai Thai fights, live (not for the faint hearted), soaking the unique atmosphere. An experience that, unlike your holiday glow, will stay with you long after you return home.
